One suicide can lead to more. There are examples of this within high schools or other forms of community, especially with young people involved.

Suicidal tendencies can also run in families, but I'm not sure if that is a reaction to the first one or that the same underlying mental illness is passed on.

A friend of mine's mother attempted suicide. When my friend told me about it, she said she had thought about it many times as well. She said she would be driving and suddenly she had this overpowering thought that things would be so much easier if she just slammed her car into a tree. That was about 20 years ago and she's come along way and seems happy, but I do wonder if she still has that thought.

When I first saw a photo of Andy Spade I noticed the buck teeth and resemblance to a rat. Maybe the mask is a last inside joke with his wife, possibly related to something when the kid was growing up.

They're going to climb more, too. Guns is part of it. Mental illness too. But it's bigger than that. There's giant, growing gap of sorrow in America, a lack of significance and meaning is an issue, and when truth becomes so relative that you don't know who or what to trust, checking out increasingly seems like a viable option.

 

Up 30 percent since 1999. Not coincidentally, right around the time the Internet took off.
