I think this is what will happen... lots of spectacle, and little of substance. NK might agree to something, but it won't be a large step, it won't be verifiable, and once they get whatever reward for their willingness to compromise, very little of it will actually come to pass. Kim has already gotten much of what he wanted - he's been feted as a world leader, which will look great back home. People were literally chanting his name as he arrived today.

No one has a clue what will happen between Trump and Kim. I think that the best probability is that Kim flatters Trump, then gets much the better part of the deal by exploiting his ego and ignorance. OTOH, if Trump plays hardball and really pushes hard for actual nuclear disarmament, the whole thing could fly apart in hours. Who knows?

Opinion | Trump Tries to Destroy the West

The meeting’s central disagreements were over tariffs that Trump has imposed for false reasons. He claims that he’s merely responding to other countries. But the average current tariff of the United States, Britain, Germany and France is identical, according to the World Bank: 1.6 percent. Japan’s is 1.4 percent, and Canada’s is 0.8 percent. Yes, every country has a few objectionable tariffs, but they’re small — and the United States is not a victim here.

So Trump isn’t telling the truth about trade, much as he has lied about Barack Obama’s birthplace, his own position on the Iraq War, his inauguration crowd, voter fraud, the murder rate, Mexican immigrants, the Russia investigation, the Stormy Daniels hush money and several hundred other subjects. The tariffs aren’t a case of his identifying a real problem but describing it poorly. He is threatening the Atlantic alliance over a lie.

Part of it is that Trump focuses all but exclusively on deficits in manufactured goods while ignoring services, such as financial and legal. America is no longer competitive in many manufacturing fields due to labor costs. The exception would be in high end technical manufacturing, but it is true even there. We simply compete with a smaller pool.

They've shortened the schedule which indicates any agreement might be limited to promises to keep talking. Which is not nothing, and if Trump described it as a hopeful first step, he'd be within his rights. Better a series of going a long way at a snail's pace discussions than war with a nuclear power.

I'd wager my third testicle that this never happened.
