I'm starting to wonder if the Jon Gruden experiment is going to be a huge flameout, and quickly. Maybe not as fast as Barry Melrose in his stint with Tampa Bay, but it just feels like this could be an epic disaster.

Is pro football the quickest at revealing a coach who is half-assing it? I'd imagine so. I think you could delegate in basketball and be fine. I'm pretty sure you could Weekend at Bernie's most MLB managers and the team might at worst lose an extra five games. I don't know enough about hockey or soccer to say. But the NFL? That would seem to be obvious in the first five minutes of the opener.

 

This is cynical to say, but I’m betting he cites CTE as the cause of his actions.

I started to get that feeling when I read the SI article and saw the photos. It's one thing to embrace a media creation when you are in the media - quite another when you are the head coach. Didn't work out well for Ditka. And this already has the Ditka in New Orleans smell to it.

There's literally no reason to think the Gruden thing would work in the first place. Just look at his record the first time around. Hiring a shitty coach who has been out of the game for a decade is seldom a recipe for success.

Having said that, it's a 10 year, $100 million dollar contract. They're not buying it out anytime soon. (Granted, it's the Raiders, so there's always the chance they'll just decide not to pay him.)

 

A baseball manager would get picked apart for not pinch hitting when you should or leaving a pitcher in too long.
