In South Carolina rally, Trump targets Sanford, McCain and TV comedians

In a discursive 58-minute rally at Airport High School here, he attacked Arnold Schwarzenegger for his TV ratings, revived criticism of Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) for his extramarital affair on what Trump inaccurately called the “Tallahassee Trail,” accused Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) of “grandstanding,” lamented the small high school gymnasium, misstated NATO spending, called home-state comedian Stephen Colbert a “lowlife,” recited his long and recently soured history with comedian Jimmy Fallon over a hair tussle, and repeatedly mocked some of his predecessors as being worse than him.

Trump said that Democrats don’t like police officers and that his tax cuts are the “greatest ever.” He exaggerated the U.S. trade deficit. He took credit for better ticket sales at the Olympics and seemingly even for more rockets going to space, describing SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk’s rockets to an apparently perplexed crowd.

“NASA is now open for business!” he said. “We’re going to create a space force!”

He accused Germany of ripping off the United States with automobiles, even though BMW is one of the state’s biggest employers.

He assured the crowd that his hair is real, bragged about the myriad TVs on Air Force One and complained that he has been treated unfairly, saying he deserved more praise for his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — and most everything else. “Sometimes you have to toot your own horn because nobody else is going to do it,” he said.

Trump called public opinion polls “fake” — Gallup showed his approval down to 41 percent Monday — and told his assembled supporters that they were the “super-elite” because they were richer, smarter and more patriotic. He somehow dissected the American and Canadian national anthems, saying he prefers the American one.

There's a difference between making a specific item, a wedding cake, and not a specific item, serving food in a restaurant. Let's go back to Memories Pizza. Liberals were up in arms over the owner saying they would not cater a gay wedding. Mind you, they were never asked to, it was a hypothetical. They could refuse to cater a wedding should they choose, they cannot refuse to serve a gay couple who came into the restaurant for a meal.

The thing here is conservatives just move on and eat somewhere else. Liberals file lawsuits and whine like children. I'm all for the Red Hen denying Sanders service, and everyone knowing about it. Let the free market decide what happens to their business. I'm all for businesses deciding who they do business with. I just find it hypocritical coming from the side that is all about tolerance and love and "when they go low, we go high" nonsense kicking people out of their business.

I'm curious, when is the Red Hen going to close for diversity training?

I think the difference is stereotyping a particular group of people and judging them all, versus weight the character and actions of a specific person and then judging only that person.

Probably around the time that most people's understanding of the word changed from what John Locke meant by it to what Herbert Croly meant by it. We're a country that was founded on individual rights. It was liberal to think that people should be free, economically and socially, with everyone having equal rights (yes, I know we have a history of not living up that ideal, so no need to have that discussion) and civil liberties that protected every person from a king or some other form of government oppressing them. If that is what you mean, I'd say I am a proud liberal. A civil libertarian.

During the last century, though, liberalism morphed into something quite different. And those types of liberals are more like Donald Trump than they realize. The ideals might be different than Donald Trump's populist bullshit that in his mind makes him a king ruling by decree -- he, and only he, can make everyone's lives great (believe me!). But just because you label the things you want to force on everyone "progressive" rather than , say,"nationalistic," doesn't change the fact that you are making every individual secondary to an obtrusive government. ... one, that over decades impinged more and more on people economically and socially in a paternalistic way that made a lot of people feel oppressed.

In any case, those kinds of "liberals" usually don't get how similar they are to Trump in terms of their means (not their intended ends). They also don't get that they they are the antithesis of the "life, liberty and property" kind of liberal who thought people should be left alone economically and socially to live the way THEY want, as long as they aren't impinging on others' rights.
