I'd bet a serious sum of money that in Trump's one-on-one conversations with potential Justices, he'll ask how they'll rule on HIM. And it's a no bet guarantee that the nominee will lie under oath to Congress about it. The Supreme Court will rule 5-4 that the President is above the law, as long as he's a Republican.

 

The fact that Republicans hate him is laughable. He's the most consequential senator of the last 25 years, maybe 50. He's absolutely shameless, a shape-shifting rat fuck hypocrite, but he's really good at this.

 

Exactly. And he'll ask if they will lobby Roberts, who would be trial judge in Senate if House impeaches.

 

The Supreme Court as an institution is dead. The next time there is a Democratic President and Congress, they will either pack the court their way or face instant political oblivion from their own party. Republicans come back, same thing happens. It's probable that after that, or before that, the Court will issue rulings states will simply refuse to obey. Now that it is obvious raw power is all that matters in American life, the idea of an "independent judiciary" is a sick joke.

 

When nine people kick the bucket or decide to retire has a lot more importance than it should, methinks.

No, not yet. But it's dead certain Trump will ask, as Comey proved, and if the nominee is asked and tells the truth, his life is ruined. So he'll lie. After that, who knows? It's not beyond the realm of possibility the President's private conversations are not private at all. Intelligence agencies foreign and domestic could be listening in. I also do not believe the Court would rule any President is above the law, even if it's the majority's President. That sets a precedent they could come to regret. Such a ruling could lead a Democratic President to say the Court has no validity, and it's rulings are null and void. It's the same thing that keeps Mitch McConnell from getting rid of the filibuster (and which incidentally is also why he's in such a hot hurry to get this nomination through, even though it'd be better politics to make it a midterm issue). Rational pols always calculate what could happen when the tables are turned.
