You might say, “where we may be going, we don’t need roads?”

    To be continued...

There are some people who enjoy driving.
Most people just prefer to public transit, for a wide variety of very valid and for insignificant reasons.

For me, driving is a means to an end, I get no particular enjoyment from the act.

You've never driven 90 down a highway? Never taken a tight corner at high speed?

Sure? But that’s a pretty small percentage of time spent driving, for most of us anyway.

I like driving but maybe the more I think about it I like traveling, or going, or moving. I like finding cool places and I like listening to podcasts and the radio.

If I could take a nap instead? Or watch a show? Or work on a story? I’d miss some elements but I’d also definitely take advantage a lot of the time.

With no evidence whatsoever to back it up, yes, I think people enjoy driving (when not in heavy traffic).

Could be generational for sure. And it might be easier for me to say since I only drive now when I'm on vacation.

I think for as many people as might find those things exciting, an equal number would find them frightening.

Plenty of folks find driving something to endure rather than enjoy.

I enjoy driving but out has nothing to do with pushing my car to an extreme for the thrill of it. It's more about being out of the house and the opportunity to see something other than my neighborhood. Honestly, if I can drive the back roads with not many cars around that's the best.

Not liking to drive is like not liking sex. I understand these sorts of people exist. But I’m allowed to be puzzled by them.

    No.

Trains are on a fixed track with no cross traffic. Planes are also on a fixed route with no cross traffic but with weather.

    Automobiles have:

    Cross traffic

    Opposite lane traffic

    Pedestrians

    Cyclists

    Unlicensed mini-bikes and motorized scooters

    Scooter startups.

    Police chases

Fire trucks rushing to and fro to justify their outrageous salaries and pensions.

    Fog

    Rain

    Snow

    Sleet

    Dogs

    Cats

    Toddlers

    Squirrels

Spilled lumber off the back of a pick-up truck

Broken glass in front of your driveway.

No seriously: Computers are for sure capable of processing all these things.

They are. But they have to be told to do so. Dealing with billions of edge cases is many years of programming. Not saying it can’t be done, but it’ll be more than 20 years before self-driving cars are anything other than an interesting idea.
