Listing obstacles like JTF did still leaves us with an O(n) solution.

And you realize that drones with automated obstacle avoidance (in three dimensions) at an affordable price already exist, right?

Is it complicated? Sure. .... but they're already further down the road than you seem to grasp. And as I said: As cars and our roads get smarter (i.e. able to report to each other their relative position and vector), the problem only gets less complicated.

Besides: Computer Scientists really, really, really love pathing algorithms.

In 10 years all cars will come with programming that does not allow you to change lanes if an object is where you are changing lanes into. They will also stop before you run into something. They will not allow you to tailgate. Actually, it might be sooner.

And it some point, in 20 years is the estimation, you will not be driving a car in the road. It will drive you.

You will not own a car. You will request a car, like an uber, to take you places.

I assume we can say goodbye to insurance premiums? All accidents, after all, are the fault of the automakers.

    An
    And drunk driving and traffic.

Unsure about insurance. Money is involved so I’m sure that won’t totally go away.

That's not really enjoying driving, though. You can get out of the house and see something other than your neighborhood even if the car is driving itself.
I've got three children under the age of 3. There are times when traveling up and down California provides a nice respite.
I listen to podcasts or KNBR.
But what I'm enjoying is the solitude, not the driving.
I can do that in a car that drives itself.

All I know is my GF just bought a hot sports car, and now she wants to drive EVERYWHERE.

The opposite of yours. Fast and aggressive, with the occasional white knuckles for the passenger.

I know those are dominoes, but that made me think of the first 50+ years of Scrabble on a flat board with the letter tiles shifting all around. Hated that. Hated, hated, hated.

The arrival of the plastic grid board was nirvana.
