Yeah but that armchair "farmer" Yankee Fan knows more about what affects the farmer than Mr. Boyd. Believing people like YF is how the Orange Monster got elected. Maybe now people will wake up in November 2018.

When in history has a trade war with tariffs on imported goods been successful? When I got my Econ degree this was the worst economic strategy ever employed.

Further, let's see, what exactly is the end game that YF alludes to but fails to identify?

Who has the leverage? Seems to be China to me; they're the ones making the most products and who receives the net trade $$. That's basic economics. If somehow you think that you can be a net importer with a trade deficit and yet you have leverage over the net exporter?

Above all else, farmers are planners. They look at crop markets when they decide what to plant. They look at weather patterns. They look at the price of the various chemicals they need, fertilizers and insecticides. They're in a business where they basically get paid once a year, so they draw loans against their expected return and pay them all off when the crop goes to market.

Market instability is the farmer's enemy... and now no one knows where prices will bottom out, or how long the trade embargoes will last, or what new items may be added in the next round. Pig farmers have already taken a bath, and soy farmers are right behind them.

If Trump is going to crater their businesses, in some cases farms that they have been working for three to five generations, they are not going to be happy with him. The longer this nonsense goes on, they madder they will be. Trump hates to admit he is wrong and back down, so we better hope that the Chinese blink and offer a way out. The thing is that their market is far more controlled by the central government, and that government is willing to do what it must to keep the farmers above water if it needs to enforce a government decision. There is no Congress to start getting heat from their home states. If China decides that it is a matter of face to force Trump to renounce the tariff (probably by declaring victory) then they will outlast him, because it will ultimately be up to Xi Jinping.

I found this to be interesting to play with. I took the exam and in general did not think too hard, just responded quickly and instinctively, and my profile popped out in the middle of libertarian liberal. Who could have guessed, right?

Yeah ... no. Trump’s supporters, in the main, don’t understand the first fucking thing about any of this. Which is not all that surprising seeing as how Trump himself is just as ignorant.

You want a better long-term deal? Get that fool out of the way and let the market do its thing.

You've listened to Trump blunder his way from one thing to another and you've listened to him feed you lies and bullshit.

And yet you still think he's got some sort of strategy, beyond whatever he last saw on Fox and Friends.

    Tragically hilarious.

The market is currently disrupted by lousy trade deals.

Trump is fighting to get to a place where we have free trade, and no government subsidies, so that the market can do its thing.

In order to save the economy Trump is willing to burn it to the ground?

You really believe all of this, don't you?

No, he’s not. His Crayola-level understanding on trade probably plays pretty well around the 19th hole ... believe me, I’ve listened to it for decades ... and that’s all he’s fighting for. Those nods and those attaboys are all that interest him.
