My most charitable view of their actions is that the current group was not getting out of East next year or any time in the foreseeable future, so they saw it as shoot for stars and, if that fails, they get a head start on the tanking process. I don't think they'll have the outcome OKC had with George, though.

    Worth a try.

I mean, if you can get a superstar, might as well do it. It’s unlikely the team gets worst short term, and where is this group in two years anyway?

That's probably it. Which is kind of odd, given that they won the East last season and couldn't get past the Cavs... and LeBron is gone. (To be fair, I don't think they can compete with Boston, and probably not with Philly.)

Ultimately I suspect they really wanted to ditch DeRozan and his salary, particularly after his disappearing act in the playoffs.

The pick going to San Antonio is protected 1-20, according to Woj.

I'm surprised the Spurs didn't value picks more than they did, because this ain't much.

Feels like the Raptors got Leonard pretty darn cheap, assuming he ever actually shows up there and plays.

Maybe they know that Canadawillsoon becracking down on immigration from the US and they have a feeling Leonard may be denied entry into Canada

The title should be something along the lines of:

Hed: Many people who profess to love a given sports franchise and spend money on official apparel and other team-related merchandise actually have little to no understanding of the sport played by their favorite team
Subhed: This is especially true in the LA market

After the initial Twitter freakout, it looks like Ujiri did pretty well in this gamble.

Did not give up Anunoby or Siakim. First rounder is top-20 protected or becomes two seconds.

DeRozan is furious, with reports claiming he went to Vegas to meet with the team last week...and was told he wasn't getting dealt. Tough business.

He was great for this franchise. Committed to the city and the organization, never a whiff of scandal.

It was time for change. With Boston/Milwaukee/Philadelphia rising, this core proved it couldn't get it done.

Perhaps. But "it's time for a change" and "this core proved it couldn't get it done" are ideas that have wrecked far more franchises for years than have ever won them titles.

Yeah, it's a gamble. We'll see. I understand why he did it, though.

Any chance he gets flipped to the Lakers?
