No, their job is targeting and displacement.

I don't know, maybe @YankeeFan was joking. Just a thought.

If only somebody had already raised that possibility. Oh wait. I did.

They aren't 'suing' these people looking for money. The survivors are named in the suit so that a court can determine what rights or potential liabilities the parties have.

This is the strategy sold to MGM by their lawyers. On a cold, logical level maybe it makes sense. I, thank God, am not a lawyer. However, I have been sued a couple of times in the course of my work. Although none of them went anywhere, simply being served the papers causes a lot of stress and anxiety. And I was half-expecting to be served because of the nature of the stories I wrote. None of the victims expected this, so try and imagine their shock. This is even before the optics of the situation are considered. A pox on the houses of MGM and their lawyers.

MGM is trying, in a very basic sense, to get to set the definition of what is and isn't terrorism. I don't want a business full of whores and hustlers defining anything. Just tell me where the pissers and cash cage are and shut the fuck up.

What's MGM supposed to do? Have a bunch of lawsuits across a bunch of state courts, have to file the same motions, get conflicting decisions, appeal some, and have it all drag out over years? Or try to get it before a few courts to decide?
And MGM isn't defining what is and isn't terrorism. It will have its day in court opposed by counsel for the victims to have a judge decide the issues over a law passed by Congress.

Must be great to be shot; survive, then be served a lawsuit and have to get lawyered up. But what else can you do? Have MGM have a bunch of lawsuits across a bunch of state courts, have to file the same motions, get conflicting decisions, appeal some, and have it all drag out over years?

While we line up to shit all over MGM, it's probably worth remembering MGM's "crime" in the shooting:

It owned the hotel with the best view of the music festival.

These were people who threatened to sue or have dismissed actions against MGM.

Didn't help to give the shooter special access to the hotel's service elevators, where he could lug his arsenal up less conspicuously.

My guess is that some MGM policies and procedures have been changed since the Route 91 shooting.
