Thank you for the responses. I'm kicking it around for a project.
When I rewatched it on YouTube, my reaction was that it was racist as fuck.
We watched the movie in my Catholic school back in the day and everyone laughed at that scene, even the nun.

I don't know how many people here have been paying much attention, but Britain has busted Russian interference in the Brexit vote. Cambridge Analytica, Facebook, and a number of familiar names are involved. Carole Cadwallader has done some great investigative work on the story. Nice explainer here.

This Molly Ringwald New Yorker piece does not look too kindly at Hughes.

Dog Tag Bakery is pretty cool. In addition to the good foods they make, they have a social mission to help veterans.

I have a buddy who is an Iraq war veteran with PTSD who spent six months at an apprenticeship there so he could bring the same business concepts back and open his own shop.

All of Sixteen Candles is an unfunny trainwreck, IMO.

Sounds like she has the same mixed emotions that many of us do when she looks back on it. I loved the Hughes movies, they captured my own outsiderdom pretty well, and that was rare in movies at that time. Still, when I look back at them with the perspective of age and having grown as a person, I see the enormous flaws.

That article touched on the National Lampoon as well, which I read avidly during the early 70's. Some of what is in them holds up pretty well, particularly Chris Miller's pieces, but a lot of it was pretty bad, mostly funny because it ran down the line between outrage and outright bad taste. I suppose that means that my tastes have changed over time.
