I thought there was a big crowd and some media coverage in the original, but it's been a while, so I could have that wrong. You are correct that the greater significance was to the players, especially the convicts.

 

Only if they include the story about the players laying on the highway.

 

The main characters from "The Art of Fielding" would make for a tremendous profile.

That was the best start to a sports novel I ever read; absolutely loved it (and the novel as a whole).
