Because Manafort can decide to talk at anytime. If Trump doesn't pardon him, Manafort has nothing to gain by staying silent.

When someone describes themselves as a taxpayer, they’re about to be an asshole.

Understood, but the difference between saying it about Mueller and saying it about Trump is that Mueller is playing against a verifiable moron, who surrounded himself with morons, all of whom operated for years without ever thinking that one day their dealings would be inspected by a seasoned federal prosecutor with subpoena power and a broad mandate. It's easy to play chess against someone if you know every single move they are going to make, and Trump is as predictable as the sunrise.

There's keeping breathing. Not having polonium replace the sugar on his Frosted Flakes, accidentally falling out of a 10th story window, etc.

Manafort got a $9m fraudulent loan when he was broke as hell because the bank president looked the other way. The loan, likely to be written off later, was grease for Manafort to put that bank president up for Secretary of the Army.

    Manafort did exactly that.

That's not something that happened long before Manafort joined the campaign.
