Fortunately, the legislature may be out of the loop unless they can get SCOTUS to intervene. They'll have the option of drawing their own maps that are constitutional, which they have shown themselves completely incapable of doing, or having a court appointed special master do it, which is what happened in one of the related cases involving the general assembly's own districts.

Judge Wynn's opinion in this case is a bit of masterful legal writing. He has tightly boxed in the legislative leadership using their own arguments from their tinkering with other elective offices (most notably the races for N.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals).
