Yup. Looked it up. Jimmy’s an enlisted Marine. Served multiple Afghan tours. Brother Jack, USNA ‘09. Helipoter pilot. Jack’s wife is a USAF reserves pilot. Doug McCain, the oldest son is a former Navy pilot, now American Airlines. 4th son is in the family beer distributor business.

 

Before Jimmy's first deployment, John took him to Las Vegas for a ribald sendoff—they went for a big fight. Jimmy and I were chatting in the casino, and I asked him whether he knew where he was headed. He told me—I can't remember the particular Iraqi nightmare he was making for—and then John kind of quietly leaned in and said, "Can you do me a favour? Maybe don't print exactly where he's going."
