I don't know how many "Big 3" beat writers are left at newspapers that haven't been poached - but the way the newspaper industry has been shredded by The Athletic is pretty endemic of the lack of foresight that is plaguing the industry and has plagued the industry. You would have thought papers would have locked down their lead beat writers in the last year, or at minimum let them go - to make sure they weren't stuck trying to fill a key beat weeks before the season began.

There is a move coming that will be a very interesting test. Popular blog/column going behind the paywall. It's a smart move by The Athletic.

Isn't just about everything behind the paywall?

Does anyone know the Athletic's subscription model yet? I've heard they're trying to use a similar model pioneered by POLITICO.

Yes, the model is: if you pay money to them, you get access to the full content. It’s quite revolutionary

No, shit, Sherlock. POLITICO, like many trade publications, has fluctuating subscription rates for it's inch-by-inch progress of different policies within the government. That's why they don't list a set price.

A D.C.-based law firm that speciliazes in lobbying the automotive industry, for example, might pay thousands of dollars for a POLITICO Pro subscription that follows policy changes related to that industry.

I've heard/read The Athletic might be following that pattern.

Anyone who pays thousands of dollars for an Athletic subscription deserves a plaque to the Brooklyn Bridge Hall of Fame
