In an industry ravaged by the likes of Gatehouse/Gannett, what companies are still good to work for?

A lot of the Gannett criticism comes from their history of constant initiatives that were little more than useless busywork and distraction.

Sadly there doesn't seem to be a newspaper company with that level of investment in its employees.

I've been in the industry for a while. What's a "bonus?"

My wife's 20-year gift from the newspaper was losing all of her paid vacation from the new ownership, which came a few years after the 10% pay cut. But, at least for now, she still has a job.

My company fits some like a T ... but most of the opportunities are with the leaner online models. On the back end, some locally owned small dailies and weeklies are grounded enough in their areas to be reasonable options.

This is almost comical. I had to read it twice.

Hey, I got you beat! I got a $20 gas card last year for my Christmas bonus!

Yeah, I hear you. It's not great, by any means, but thankfully we never had furloughs and layoffs have been minimal in recent years. Knock on wood.

It's like saying "I went to the dentist and had a root canal. They didn't numb up my mouth unfortunately because they were too cheap, but they still gave me a toothbrush afterward!"

Poor healthcare coverage is a huge deal.
