I would hope that one of the top jobs in ones industry pays more than 70 grand per year:

If it's a smaller market 70k is OK. I know it's not a punch-clock job. Never was a beat writer, but know a few guys who were.
Someone said 60k was high for an NBA beat.

I don't think it is at all. I was told that a publication did, though.

  4. 50-70 is the accepted range to expect for most NBA beats. Obviously in bigger (and therefore more expensive) markets like New York, LA, Boston, Bay Area, Chicago, DC, etc. you can expect it to be a little higher than that to adjust for cost of living.

How many markets would pay $100,000 for a lead NFL beat writer. I would guess in most cities that is the most important beat on the sports desk.

$100,000 in markets with huge NFL followings and the need to adjust for coat of living. It also depends on the publication and if it has the money to pay a beat writer that much.

David Aldridge is reporting that as well.

George Richards will be covering the Panthers for the Athletic after spending a year covering the Blue Jackets for Columbus. George was a hell of a beat writer for the Panthers with the Herald for a bunch of years so everything there makes sense.

Columbus brought in two reporters from South Florida to cover the Blue Jackets and both left to return to South Florida after one season. I not sure if the other guy, Steve Gorten, stayed in the business or went back to being a teacher.

Looks like they still landed some decent names in D.C., despite an inability to poach anyone of consequence from WaPo. David Aldridge is obviously the big one.
