It's all fun press that Waffle House is debating closing its stores. However, you have to think of the cooks and wait staff who, if the company decides not to close, need to show up to work, even during the middle of a storm.

So you are saying somebody needs to think of the waitresses?

Does this person understand the difference between storm surge along the coast and wave heights on the open sea?
It will not be an 83-foot storm surge. It is physically impossible to get anywhere near that.

Also posted this in the college football thread. After Colgate and Furman canceled their game, Colgate donated its hotel rooms and meals to evacuees.

I don't know how compassionate Waffle House is with its employees as far as demanding people come in, just giving them the option, or letting them bring their families to ride it out at the store.

What I do know is that in my younger days I worked through two hurricanes at a bar that stayed open throughout the storms. The owner didn't require anyone to come in, but most of us did anyway. Getting through a hurricane is mostly a long, boring slog. Being around coworkers I was friends with made it a whole lot less stressful. Also, we made good money during the storm. Good money.

I suspect the Waffle House employees who come in share in the tips and that because they're one of the only places open, do better than usual.

My Facebook feed today was an alternating series of posts along the lines of "Silent Sam protest rally scheduled for Wrightsville Beach, 4 am Friday" and "AR-15 giveaway, Carolina Beach, All Morning Friday"

Neither is particularly funny and it just struck me as sad that some of us can't even set aside politics to get through a storm like this together.
