But lying about being a normal American teenager or college student is a line that shouldn’t be crossed for a federal appeals court, or national elective office.

The tortoise knew this was a poor candidate all along, knew about the paper trail and multiple accusations, and proceeded anyway.

You dig far enough, everybody has done some stupid shit in their lives. Everybody. Stuff they regret, breaks they were given after breaking rules that can be twisted into getting shown favorable treatment, people they've wronged, bad breakups, dates where maybe they went for a goodnight kiss that wasn't going to happen, whatever. It can all be twisted around into something sinister with a little bit of effort.
And nothing is off limits. Look how far they're going back to disqualify Kavanaugh. It doesn't matter that the guy has been an upstanding citizen and a respected lawyer/judge for his career of 25 or 30 years. He's being disqualified and slimed for incidents -- and not even necessarily criminal incidents, but stupid antics -- that happened in high school and early college. You really think this is going to be a one-and-done thing? Whoever replaces Kavanaugh as the nominee if he's withdrawn will get similar treatment because that's how the game is going to be played from now on.

True that. But at the same time, how do you keep pushing for this guy unless you're that much in denial?

I still don't know what the ultimate political fallout of all this will be. If the Democrats manage to torpedo Kavanaugh, the victory might very well be counterproductive because it might enrage Trumpists who might otherwise have sat out the election. The irony there will be that high turnout would help Trumpists, who generally seem hellbent on building as many roadblocks as possible to registration and voting because such efforts disproportionately impact those unAmerican black, brown and poor people.
The Senate is unlikely to flip under any circumstances, but I'm guessing it's even less likely if Kavanaugh goes down.

Here's the most damning line in the piece:

Senior Republican staffers also learned of the allegation last week and, in conversations with The New Yorker, expressed concern about its potential impact on Kavanaugh’s nomination. Soon after, Senate Republicans issued renewed calls to accelerate the timing of a committee vote.

GOP isn't really interested in finding out if any of this is true.

As long as Kavanaugh takes out Roe vs Wade and protects Trump from impeachment, they don't care
Gorsuch was first because they knew he would make it
Kavanaugh is the one they want on the SC

Grassley seems like he's been bending over backward to let Ford be heard. His only real demand seems to have been that she has to actually present evidence and answer questions, and not throw the accusation into the room like a pipe bomb and run away. Considering what's at stake, that seems reasonable. FWIW, even Trump was taking this approach until his mood ring turned yellow.
The others, I think, see the accusation for the political maneuver that it is. They're not handling it very well from an optics standpoint, but there has also been good reason to be skeptical of it all.

I think Trumpers are coming out anyway
I think the blue wave is vastly oversold
