I feel as though a few soft Trump supporters changed their minds after he took office, and they couldn't tell themselves that "he'll change" anymore. But after, say, six months, he was clearly what he is. If they stuck by him then, they'll ride with him forever. And he knows it. He knows that he has a base that's too racist, sexist, and dumb to be moved.

 

He has some supporters who are intelligent people. They aren't racist or sexist. They just don't like being told that they fucked up. The more they are told that they sided with the bad guys, the more they dig in despite the evidence.

 

To be still with him at this point, they will have had to rationalize a whole lot of awful, awful stuff. So I've pretty much written off having reasoned discussions with any of them--I tried up until Charlottesville, but after that it just seemed pointless. I agree with you that really is, sadly, just a numbers game at this point. Something pretty monumental (and probably terrible) is going to have to happen before this gets better.

 

The American appetite for corruption, sadism and incompetence runs deeper than our schoolbooks suggest.

 

That makes them bad guys.

 

There's also a big chunk of people who simply won't vote for anyone but a Republican. They don't care for Trump, but other issues like abortion and tilting the Supreme Court to the right meant they'd vote 'R' no matter who was on the ballot.

 

That's all true.

On the other hand, who EVER admits to voting for the wrong person?

If anyone wants to chime in and list the "wrong" candidates they have voted for, I'll happily be wrong.

They want a 'reasoned' discussion, they can choose another dance partner on the internet.
