This is the anti-Florence. Wind/storm surge will be extremely destructive, but it's moving so fast it'll be back in the Atlantic off the Virginia coast by the wee hours of Friday morning. Thoughts to everyone in the Panhandle.

Meanwhile, Leslie -- which became a named subtropical storm on Sept. 23 -- has reformed into a hurricane out in the middle of the Atlantic and is just drunkenly stumbling around in a loop. What a weird storm.

I had to go across Mobile Bay for work yesterday afternoon. The drive back home, which normally takes 20-30 minutes, took an hour and a half due to evacuee traffic. The Mobile Bay Causeway was partly closed due to water lapping up on the road.

But at least people are taking heed and getting out of the Panhandle. The Florida Coast between Panama City and Tampa is not that densely populated, but Tallahassee and South Georgia are going to get it pretty bad as well.

This is when it sucks to live overseas. There's jack I can do for my friends and family.

Talked to a colleague yesterday who's from Panama City. He's wondering if his wife will be contacting him in 48 hours to tell him they don't have a house anymore. He can't do more than hope.

This sucker picked up a lot of strength overnight, it appears.

One of my best friends from high school is a TV meteorologist in Panama City. Hunkered down at the station, of course, but I hope he also still has a house after this one. Went from a Cat 2 to 4 in about 24 hours.

A storm that nobody heard of a week ago rapidly strengthens into a Cat 4 over the too-warm waters of the Gulf, days after a devastating climate change report is released. I hope everybody will be okay, but these storms are going to keep coming, and we know why. We're just not going to do anything about it. Good luck, Florida.

This one was unusual in that it basically formed on the Gulf/Carribean "border", as opposed to most major storms that begin way out in the Atlantic.

Newest update shows sustained 150 mph winds. That's going to be one hell of a storm surge.

Good luck, the entire East Coast.

For years I thought my old man was deluded for wanting to sell the family's beach property out of fear over rising sea level. Not that I discount that it is happening or should be a concern, just that the particulars of this property means it will be a very long time before that house is in danger specifically from sea level rise. I was also a little sentimental because my grandpa built it in the 50s.

But when Florence was coming in a few weeks ago, and I didn't have to run down there to do all the hurricane prep for him, it was the first time I was glad it is no longer our worry.
