My Civil War history is a bit rusty but I believe Lew Wallace (author of Ben-Hur) defeated Lee at the Battle of Dog Whistle.

Was Trump saying that or going anywhere near it? I don't know what tortured analogy he was trying to make, but it didn't sound like it. It sounded like he was trying to compare himself to Lincoln and Grant and started it by mentioning one of their major opponents. I don't get where he was going with it, but he wasn't "praising" Robert E. Lee. People are trying to play the racist card because he off-handedly said something you can go to any library or book store in America and find an entire section of books devoted to.
I'm not wading into Lee's politics or those of the Confederacy here, and neither did Trump. Giving him flak for calling Lee a "great general" when Lee is, in fact, universally regarded as one of the best generals on either side of the Civil War, is face palmingly stupid.

He even puts a bloody exclamation point at the end of his quote on the plaque.

This is all what you expect from a buffoon who goes together with historical knowledge like a liverwurst-and-tuna-fish sandwich.

I really think states should consider legislation that forbids Secretaries of State from being on the ballot in elections they supervise. They should be required to step aside before the election. Most obvious conflict of interest in government.

Base commander and probably his next level higher are going to catch hell over that. Quite properly.
