What stuns me is how flat-out stupid this whole operation was.

The Saudis tied themselves directly to it.

If they wanted to do this there are other ways.

It was either an incredible act of stupidity or they they just didn't care the entire world would know.

 

Anyone get a 9/11 vibe looking at those hedshots?

But why do it in the consulate, where they had to know that surveillance cameras would be able to document Khashoggi's arrival (and fail to document his departure), to say nothing of the likelihood that the Turkish government would have the place wired? Why charter a plane? Why use official government actors? All MBS needed to do was maintain some shred of plausible deniability. Ask Putin. That's all it takes.

 

That's the thread I referenced in a post earlier where I mentioned Marcy Wheeler.

The place they chose to do what they did. With others knowing Khashoggi was going there. They tied themselves to it directly.

Why didn't they make the smallest of effort to distance themselves?

 

No idea. Brazenness, maybe. Incompetence. Panic.

 

It's just stunning to me, the way this went down.
