Khashoggi's final column for the Post, received from his translator and assistant a day after he was reported missing ...

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression

I was recently online looking at the 2018 “Freedom in the World” report published by Freedom House and came to a grave realization. There is only one country in the Arab world that has been classified as “free.” That nation is Tunisia. Jordan, Morocco and Kuwait come second, with a classification of “partly free.” The rest of the countries in the Arab world are classified as “not free.”

As a result, Arabs living in these countries are either uninformed or misinformed. They are unable to adequately address, much less publicly discuss, matters that affect the region and their day-to-day lives. A state-run narrative dominates the public psyche, and while many do not believe it, a large majority of the population falls victim to this false narrative. Sadly, this situation is unlikely to change.

The Arab world was ripe with hope during the spring of 2011. Journalists, academics and the general population were brimming with expectations of a bright and free Arab society within their respective countries. They expected to be emancipated from the hegemony of their governments and the consistent interventions and censorship of information. These expectations were quickly shattered; these societies either fell back to the old status quo or faced even harsher conditions than before
    .

    ...

My publication, The Post, has taken the initiative to translate many of my pieces and publish them in Arabic. For that, I am grateful. Arabs need to read in their own language so they can understand and discuss the various aspects and complications of democracy in the United States and the West. If an Egyptian reads an article exposing the actual cost of a construction project in Washington, then he or she would be able to better understand the implications of similar projects in his or her community.

The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events. More important, we need to provide a platform for Arab voices. We suffer from poverty, mismanagement and poor education. Through the creation of an independent international forum, isolated from the influence of nationalist governments spreading hate through propaganda, ordinary people in the Arab world would be able to address the structural problems their societies face.

That swell guy Duncan Hunter Jr gets a little help from his friends

Three retired U.S. Marine Corps generals signed onto a letter this week accusing a Democratic congressional candidate—a Christian of Mexican and Palestinian descent—of family ties to Islamic terrorism.

The alarmist missive was aimed at boosting Rep. Duncan Hunter, a California Republican accused of illegally using campaign funds to enrich himself, who, until his indictment, chaired a powerful committee with major influence over U.S. military and defense policy.

And it just so happens that all three Marine veterans leveling the allegations against Hunter’s opponent are defense industry lobbyists with extensive business before Hunter’s committee.

“SECURITY ALERT,” blares the top of the letter released this week by Hunter’s reelection campaign and signed by retired Marine generals Terry Paul, Randall West, and T.L. Corwin, none of whom responded to requests for comment.

“As military officers who often served in San Diego,” they wrote, “we are writing to warn you of a candidate for Congress, Ammar Campa-Najjar who represents a national security risk.”

Defense Lobbyists Hope to Scare Voters Into Voting for Indicted Congressman

There's an interrogation I'd like to see go wrong. How fast would Jared fold? What a pasty, soulless simp.

Maybe they can catch a rerun of Last Man Standing while they are at it.

In a vacuum, the comment is somewhat amusing. But considering that a journalist being sawed up while still alive is dominating headlines, it’s absolutely tone deaf. I know the mouth-breathing hee-haws who support him dismiss such nuance as the feigned outrage of overly sensitive snowflakes. But in reality, the comments are yet another example of this sub-human cretin normalizing the white-trashifying of the highest office in the land by his inability to fake even the slightest bit of class and restraint.

    This paragraph:

Ted Cruz — a candidate the Chronicle endorsed in 2012, by the way — is the junior senator from Texas in name only. Exhibiting little interest in addressing the needs of his fellow Texans during his six years in office, he has kept his eyes on a higher prize. He's been running for president since he took the oath of office — more likely since he picked up his class schedule as a 15-year-old ninth-grader at Houston's Second Baptist High School more than three decades ago. For Cruz, public office is a private quest; the needs of his constituents are secondary.
