Indisputably true. True of most senators, I'd wager, even the ones not running for an office higher than senator.

But it's not like they have any real influence in society.

I haven't seen the indictment, but I actually find this worrisome. She is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States by trying to sow discord in the U.S. political system. Basically she started some dishonest social media campaigns and started some memes.

I fear we are starting to venture into an area we shouldn't. Posting crap on social media -- even if you are a Russian with a motive to mess with us -- should fall under free speech. It's up to people to judge the value of what they are reading and learn to evaluate stuff on social media with a healthy dose of skepicism. When we let the government start criminalizing information, we open the door for them to become more liberal about who they go after and for what reasons (political enemies, for example). And that is when you lose the right.

The issue may be that it is alleged she did this at the behest or order of a foreign government. That would be a crime. But I haven't seen the indictment either.

Elena Alekseevna Khusyaynova, 44, of St. Petersburg, Russia, is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States for managing the financing of the social media troll operation that included the Internet Research Agency, which special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators charged with crimes earlier this year.

That would do it under the US Code.
