I was a Republican two years ago. I felt forced out of the party by the social-agenda wing.

Not sure I understand the full thought here.

    "Forced out?"

    "Social agenda wing?"

Why is it only "identity politics" when minorities pursue their constitutional rights and protections?

    Impressive post. Spelled Venezuela correctly.

The Florida town in which I used to live (Weston) was jokingly called Westonzuela, as so many Venezuelans had moved there.

And that was almost a decade ago.

How'd the social agenda of the Republican Party change? On immigration? Trump's an ass, and that's a reason unto itself to leave the party, but, outside of immigration, I'm not sure what areas of the social agenda changed.

I was speaking mostly about the abortion issue. Some folks, voting on that issue, go GOP. I don't agree with that choice - I think you have to make a more holistic decision, and I do - but it's not fiction, that these people exist. I know several.

As I've written before, the gay marriage issue, however many folks it once drove from the party, is kind of moot. This is true most among millennial Christians, who just don't care. But abortion...that's thornier. Always will be.

The blue collar, UAW-USW democrats were democrats but they weren't liberals. When the steel mills shut down and the car manufacturers started closing factories in the 70s and 80s these people felt forgotten about. They also needed a scapegoat so enter anyone of color, who they assumed were getting handouts and benefits that they weren't. Many of these people in the northeast were also staunch Catholic so you can add in the abortion debate. Let that simmer in a crock pot for three decades and flipping them to republican became some fish-in-a-barrel shit.
