Lies and racism are all the Republicans have to offer after two years of total government control. And it may well work for them because so many Americans are either really gullible, really racist or both.

Sadly, you have a point. Most of my neighbors should put that on t-shirts and wear it to warn people what they are getting into.

Welcome to America, where selfish gets you ahead, short-sighted places the burden on someone else at some point in the future, and stupid gets you Donald Trump.

I’ve been wondering about something regarding the Khashoggi murder and how it became public knowledge.

Turkey somehow successfully bugged the Saudi embassy in Ankara, and did so well enough that they were able to get audio of the alleged murder. Turkey pretty clearly had the Saudis’ operations wired enough that they were able to peg the entire operation with a pretty solid timeline start to finish.

Purely from a long-term point of view, why burn that over the murder of one Saudi dissident? What makes this important enough to Turkey’s current government that it’s worth burning your entire intel advantage over the Saudi government and creating a huge diplomatic mess?

Because the power politics advantage of internationally discrediting the new Saudi strongman were worth it.

They gave MBS a very public black eye. The Saudi's lies and bullshit were a valuable bonus on that. This was a public relations disaster for them and for MBS personally. If his father has truly stepped back in and gathered some of the reins of power that's even more of a win for the Turks. Trump blundered around and hurt his own position as well. They did pretty well on this one.

Add releasing the pastor and they probably will be able to get their sanctions lifted

ACTUARIALLY, your mid-20s hypothetical is also having a huge number of motorcycle accidents and so forth. And, since some people are, you know, women, having babies.

Insurance wouldn't be a bad thing in either case.

As it is now, we're all picking up those costs. Surely there's some sort of tiered or graduated system possible.

Not sure, for example, why we stopped offering $75/mo. catastrophic hospitalization coverage.

I'd imagine there are a lot of things going on here. Turkey had been in turmoil over the last half year. Its currency was collapsing, Erdogen was using crazy populist rhetoric (the U.S. is to blame, they are committing financial warfare against Turkey) to deflect blame, he had consolidated power, and appointed his brother in law the head of the central bank, which refused to raise rates to support the currency. This was causing economic turmoil, and that leads to revolt, which isn't good for a dictator. At the same time, Turkey had bought a weapons system from Russia and was challenging its NATO "allies" with its beligerance.

I'd guess the reason that Erdogen is milking this is, because the more we are talking about this, the less we are talking about him. It makes him look like the aggrieved, and it hurts Saudi Arabia, which threatens Turkey as a regional power. They are both vying to be the most important strategically to the west -- which protects their dictatorships.

I think Erdogen has actually been masterful in milking this thing. He has kept it in the news for way longer than it should have been, with a new video or piece of information coming out every day. That also has the Saudi's on their heels, because they keep lying, and they have no idea what he is going to release to make their lies look even more false than they already do.

Don't forget that Turkey is also a Sunni nation, and is the only such capable of rivaling Saudi Arabia as the most influential Sunni power. And I wonder if Erdogan suspects, rightly or wrongly, that Saudis were somehow involved in the attempted coup against him. Dictators tend to brood about events like that.
