Honestly, the fact that they didn't go off and don't have the right ISIS flag is a tell to me that they were actually made by a member of Trump's base.
The person was inept and ignorant.

    62,984,828 Americans voted for this.

    Blame them.

Dealing in rumors doesn't really fit your handle.

I guess I’m more interested in the how - and what it means for the future - than “hey, you, bad person.”

    The 'how?'

You're pointing at individuals like Clinton, and saying, "hey you, bad person."

You know who lied a lot? Reagan.

You know who told the truth? Carter.

You're also blaming institutions - like Congress, or the press. Neither of which have ever been trustworthy or held in much esteem.

People voted for every one of those congressmen and women.

And do you really think men like Hearst and Colonel McCormick weren't elitists with their own political agendas? Or that reporters who go to school at Northwestern or Columbia don't grow up in places like Oklahoma and Ohio?

How about holding the individuals who voted for Donald Trump to account?

Or maybe we should blame the church? 2000 years of religious and moral and ethical instruction, and the electorate is as greedy and ignorant as ever.

So what’s the net effect of your post? All conservative institutions and people = bad and all liberal institutions and people = good?

I agree about Carter and Reagan, by the way.

The point about the J Schools has nothing to do with drawing people to them. It’s trying to suggest that there are perhaps multiple ways in we create hierarchies in our culture, and how people distrust those.

    Not at all.

Is yours meant to be "all conservatives good"/ "all liberals bad"?

And no American anywhere at any moment in history has ever trusted Congress or the press or any hierarchy.

Attributing Trump to "elitist" journalists and an untrustworthy Congress is to say that voters bear no responsibility for their terrible choices.

The trust in mass media was far higher 25-30 years ago than it is now.

But were the "mass media" more trustworthy 25 years ago? How about 40 years ago? Or 75?

Trust/faith in the press has been falling since Watergate. Which was about as high as journalism's approval rating ever got.

And who taught them not to trust the press thereafter?

There's never been a time in history with more information available to more people than right now.
