I'm trying to keep my new knowledge that there are after-market wheel kits for coolers from making me want to fill my pockets with rocks and walk into the ocean.

I don't think it'd matter. I think Roberts sides with the other 4 and it wouldn't stun me if Thomas and Gorsuch did too. (I profess to know little about Alito.)

The Federalist Society judicial community has not made immigration a focus. A major constitutional change (which is what it would be) from the bench on that issue would be a needless political risk of their status as constitutional arbiters with little payback.

The twitter feed of National Review's Jim Geraghty today is filled with his Soros tweets. Give it up, man.

I don't know how anyone who lived in 2016 or 2017 can still say with a straight face "the rest of the Repubicans in power won't let him do this stuff, it goes against conservative principles."

I like to point out to Republicans that Soros is really their own fault. If they really wanted to stop Soros, they should have appointed Supreme Court justices who don't believe free speech should go to the highest bidder.

Of course, that would also stop the Koches, but Republicans are never willing to acknowledge that if they want to set the rules, then they should quit their whining when the other side is playing by them.

They take a very short view of history and cling to an American exceptionalism that believes we can survive anything because we are America, immune to all actual universal forces and that our sins will always be wiped away eventually by our American-ness. If they actually understood there are no bumper rails for democracy, they'd be scared out of their wits. I won't go too deeply, but I believe it's theological in nature and dangerous.

Even Americans in their 70's and 80's seem to think they've seen it all and this is simply another cycle they've seen play out 20 times in their lives. But a 300-year old bubble — in this case a beautiful inspiring bubble of personal liberty and advancement — is nothing in the scheme of things. Great societies die and there's nothing there to stop it. We are so arrogant.

It's quite possible we're in another cycle. It's possible we steer back on course. But anyone saying they know that is just writing their hopes into more confident language.
