    A day late, however, I just saw this now. Incredible how many great players missed MLB time due to war. Here’s one of the best to hold a baseball bat.

    In the Giants organization alone, there was Christy Mathewson, who never recovered from inhaling mustard gas, and Eddue Grant, the player whose name was on the monument in center field at the Polo Grounds, from World War I.

    I believe Mathewson had already retired as an active player by that time, however.

    Correct. Mathewson enlisted in 1918, and last pitched in 1916.

    I guess Ohtani was able to overcome management's refusal to provide him proper seasoning in the minors.
