    Finland: After Germany invaded Poland, the Soviets wanted to protect Leningrad from Western advances and began demanding control of disputed areas from Finland, most notably the Karelian Isthmus. Everything was about buttressing against an inevitable German attack. Prescient, no?

    Poland: See "Stalin still needed to buy time," above. Even Putin acknowledged that it was "immoral" but "a necessary evil." There was a whole bucketful of "necessary evil" shit going on at that time (see Hiroshima and Nagasaki).

    I will be in France next month. Trump will come up in every conversation. Which I don't mind, because "clown" in French is pronounced sort of like "cloon," (spelled the same way, though) and saying it cracks me up in a 12-year-old way.

    Trump got brought up a lot when I visited Havana on a cruise ship stop in May. I told one Cuban that Trump was muy loco en la cabeza and got a fist bump in return.
