Yeah, Sasse is interesting. I read 1 1/2 of the books - I grew tired of the parenting one. They're decent, but I'm not sure Sasse is much more than words.

You'd rather your children grow up to be rural, dumb and poor?

Are all rural people dumb and poor, or just the rurals you don't agree with?

And I guess I couldn't figure out how the graphic measured intelligence.

I also thought Democrats were out to fix income inequality.

Oh hell no. Ted wasn't mean. He did a lot of stupid annoying stuff but he didn't set out to hurt people.

Fucko is a vicious pig who hurts people for the sheer joy of it.

Why aren't Republicans taking personal responsibility and pulling themselves up by their bootstraps?

Ready to be packed in metric-ton pallets to be shipped to Fucko's close warm and personal friend, Uncle Vlad, for safekeeping in money bins in Russia.

Ok, I can see this. But would you agree that the press needs to call out Trump on all of his lies and hold his surrogates accountable for perpetuating his dangerous bullshit?

Disagree. He treated Georgette pretty much the same way Trump treats Melania.

Those same rural, poor people have voted overwhelmingly for democrats decade after decade. Trying to pin a "dumb" label on them because they turned to Trump's bullshit this time around isn't right. I just see different bullshit. It wasn't as refined as hope / change! But we were in a different place after 8 years of Obama.

In any case, were they smarter before (presumably when they always voted Democrat) and suddenly turned dumb? Or maybe they got tired of the bullshit they had voted for over and over again, and they were incomprehensibly given a candidate by the Democrats who played the "I am going to make your life wonderful" game particularly poorly, so that she actually seemed to have contempt for the very special interests she was trying to divide the population into and win over?

Populist politics is about finding people who are unhappy with their lives, creating enemies who are supposedly responsible, and painting yourself as different than the other candidates. ... or a savior of some sort. It's really no different if you are Trump demonizing China or Obama or immigrants or some batshit crazy thing. ... or if you are Bernie Sanders creating your 1 percent boogeymen. It's essentially the same playbook. Maybe you are dumb if you are a person who falls in for that nonsense, but so many people do that I think it's human nature. Most people are living shitty lives. Or they are resentful of others, and think they are living a shitty life. Appeal to all of those people with a simplistic populist message, and it's a winning formula. That didn't originate with Donald Trump.

As for those people in wealthier areas who vote Democratic, I hate to agree with others, but it really is an arrogance thing, which ain't exactly a mark of intelligence. Many of those people want the spoils of what they earned. ... and paternalistically see themselves as very enlightened, knowing what is best for the riff raff. They aren't handing out food in soup kitchens, though. They made themselves feel good by hosting fundraisers at $2,000 a head for Hillary. In the 70s, they would have been known as limousine liberals.

I'd also be really careful about the "dumb" part of that. Wealth is not always a byproduct of how dumb or smart you are. Would you be offended if someone suggested that people in Yemen are dumb compared to people in wealthier neighboring countries? Or that people from "shithole" Central American countries who join a caravan are dumb, because they are coming from poverty?

Jesus, look at Ted Baxter's wiki entry, and see how many adjectives overlap:

Ted is the pompous nit-wit, narcissistic anchorman for fictitious station WJM-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Satirizing the affectations of news anchormen, the character speaks in a vocal fry register parody of the narrator of the old Movietone News film strips that played in movie houses before the television era. While his narcissism fuels his delusions of grandeur, Ted's onscreen performance is buffoonish. A running joke of the show is Ted's incompetence, featuring a steady stream of mispronunciations, malapropisms, pratfalls, and miscues. Constantly in fear of being fired, Ted is, ironically, the show's only character to survive the final episode's massive layoffs at WJM.[4]

It was mostly obtusity -- he didn't realize what he was doing because he was so self-absorbed. In the end, he showed some flashes of realizing what a dickhead he was.

Sure, not very often, and usually after a brief moment of self awareness and realization his actions had hurt people, he went back to being the same old boorish Ted.

But again, he didn't set out many days with the express aim of fucking people over, as Fucko does. That's the difference.

Fucko never has any moments of self-awareness or regret. None, ever. He's explained many times he doesn't believe in them.
