I can understand the Vietnam veterans who were resentful of Bill Clinton for avoiding service. What I never understood was how people like Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan, who finagled their way out of serving in Vietnam, could be at the front of the line of people calling him a draft dodger.
One night, during Clinton's second term, I asked a conservative co-worker about this.
He said the difference was that Clinton protested the war.
That never made any sense to me. It seems a lot more honest for someone who is opposed to a war to want to avoid serving in it than someone supporting it, but finding some dubious reason to avoid serving.
That and, to me, either you served or you didn't. What difference does it make if you wiped your ass with the American flag or said "I'm behind you guys 100 percent, but sorry, I can't go. Bad knees/cyst on my ass/bone spurs"?
Why is the former more objectionable than the latter?

 

In one of Al Franken's books he has a good piece called "Operation Chicken Hawk" about all the modern day saber rattlers who skipped out of Viet Nam.

John Bolton is another one of these piles of garbage. He joined the National Guard to avoid being drafted. He even wrote in his college yearbook he didn't want to go to Viet Nam.
