    Been there, done that (1996).

And don't think for a minute we haven't been meddling since then as well. We meddled in their choice of prime minister in 1998 (potential heir to Yeltsin). We demanded Yeltsin get rid of Evgeny Primakov and put someone in that we liked. Yeltsin did. That someone . . . was Vladimir Putin.

Law of Unintended Consequences 63, USA 0.

Once it became apparent that Putin was not a Yeltsin (not a puppet, so by definition an enemy), we've been meddling in Russian elections the past few years --- not so much to change the winner (impossible to do when the incumbent has a 70 percent approval rating), but to put a dent in his numbers.

Will be interesting to see what happens in the March 31 Ukraine elections. America's puppet, Petro Poroshenko, is currently running a poor sixth in the polls --- hence, his need to start a provocation with Russia in the Kerch strait. The current leader in the polls, Yulia Tymoshenko, likely is someone America will be forced to rally behind (and ensure wins), to make sure the top Russia-friendly candidate (Yuriy Boyko, currently running third) doesn't even sniff the runoff.

Except for offering up a $50m penthouse to Putin to grease the skids.

Seems to be a common train of thought. From the Wiki . . .

Murray's smarter than that. Coal, though a shadow of what it was, is by far still the single-largest commodity shipped by rail in this country. The power plants that switched over to natural gas aren't going back to coal, regs or no regs. As far as increased exports, there is a powerful activist movement in the Pacific Northwest that is succeeding in preventing new ocean export terminals from being built, to restrict shipments to China. And in Australia, a yuuuuge coal exporter to Asia, autonomous trains are already operating from mine to port, helping suppliers further undercut global pricing.
