The GOP has become a fundamentally Stalinist party. Power is its own justification. The Leader can do no wrong.

The veneration of career politicians GHWB, McCain is at worst maudlin and at best a naked attempt to embarrass the current WH occupant.

The longer a pol lasts past their career relevance, the more glowing their obituaries. LBJ died in 1973, so he got a very mixed assessment. It was too close to the Vietnam debacle. If Nixon had died of those blood clots in 1974, his obits would not have been anything but rip jobs. But the '90s, assessments were more balanced (or less accurate, take your pick)

Great point about Johnson, who didn't outlive Vietnam. There were still troops there when he died. It's all about how long you have to rehabilitate your image if it is tarnished on the day you leave office. Trump, I suspect, will not fare well. He may not live all that long, and he will most certainly not spend his retirement building houses for low-income people in Indiana.

Can't wait to visit the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library and Casino with "Collusionem Nihil" etched onto an arch at the entrance.
