It started because of the 1932 film Rasputin and the Empress. Where it was implied that the character Princess Natasha had been raped by Rasputin. That character was supposedly intended to represent Princess Irina Alexandrovna, who sued MGM for libel. Irina and her husband Felix Yusupov were awarded $1 million in an out-of-court settlement with MGM.

Rasputin was killed at the Yusupov Palace.
