From the Wall Street Journal piece: "The committee was headed by Thomas Barrack Jr., a real-estate developer and longtime friend of Mr. Trump."

Please, please let Mr. Barrack be Kenyan-born. (Rats, Lebanese grandparents.)

WEIRD TRIVIA: He owns the Neverland Ranch!

Even before Trump was inaugurated, the first time the intelligence briefing he got about Russian interference from Clapper, Comey, Brennan, etc. was reported by CNN, I posted about it here. It didn't get much of a response on the thread at the time. It's not as if there was a shine on Trump after the campaign he ran, but he also wasn't getting the level of criticism yet he is getting now, mostly because people hadn't gotten a taste of the cartoon presidency they were in for yet. My take on it at the time was: I didn't know if there is anything Russia and him, but there would be something somewhere with him that was going to make people come to their senses. So I said we may as well get it out of the way then, because he is a dishonest bullshit artist, and I had a good feeling he was going to fall to an ethics scandal because he wouldn't be able to help himself. I just found my post. It holds just as true as ever -- he is a con man who somehow managed to get way farther in life than I would have ever thought possible for someone who isn't particularly artful at bullshitting.

More on the WSJ story re the Trump inaugural funds - FBI got documents and at least one tape when Cohen was raided. Between "What happened to the unspent funds?" and "Who gave money in exchange for access or regulatory relief?", a number of people are going to get pulled in on this. I heard an interview on NPR with one of the reporters, who mentioned that one interviewed was Franklin Haney, who is the loony rich guy who bought from the TVA a fifty year old nuclear power reactor which was never approved. He spread a lot of financial love around former Alabama Gov. Boobgrabber Bentley in an effort to gain governmental approval. He donated a million to the inaugural fund, and he is stupid enough to have left all sorts of tracks.

"The WSJ, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the investigation is in its early stages, and stemmed from materials obtained during an FBI raid earlier this year of longtime Trump attorney Michael Cohen.

Investigators in those raids reportedly obtained a recorded conversation between Cohen and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a former adviser to first lady Melania Trump who worked on the inauguration.

Wolkoff is heard expressing concern about how the committee was spending money, the Journal reported, but the news outlet could not determine when the conversation took place."

Are we to believe when corporations gave money to Inaugural Committees in the past it wasn't to influence or gain access or favor from an incoming Administration? Sorry - I think this is ridiculous. Now if the key finding is that the Trumper didn't do the traditional "wink, wink" and instead opted to get such details on paper - THAT I can believe.

Inaugural committees are sleazy by their very nature. But 1) relativism (everyone does it!) doesn't make it OK, and 2) His inauguration raised twice as much as previous committees, and there are at least some indications that they weren't very artful with the quid pro quos. He doesn't do anything subtly, and if there is any amount of corruption, you can guess he was going to take it to a level of corruption others wouldn't because their shame (and self preservation instincts) are going to kick in. Let's see what they have, and just how for sale his administration has been (including to Russian oligarchs, which supposedly Mueller is looking into).
