I'll open by saying that foreign policy is not my strong point. And I understand that we have promised support to fighters in Syria and even more so in Afghanistan. But Obama ran into the same opposition when he announced drawing down troops in Afghanistan.

I understand the President's decision is rather, um, hasty? But we have to get out of these places at some point, right? I guess he's ripping off the Band-Aid, while Obama wanted to keep applying Neosporin to the wound, or something like that. But what's the exit strategy in these nations? I'm tired of our men and women dying over there. I'm really not sure that it's doing anything to prevent terrorism within our borders.

I would be happy to be enlightened by anyone here. But from where I sit, I don't see a lot of hearts and minds being won over there. If the plan is to keep soldiers stationed and in combat in those places permanently for national security purposes, then let's just admit that. Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be any "good time" to withdraw.

    I like your analogy.

My similar thoughts were the USA never had any reason after the First Gulf War to fight and die in the Middle East. Trump, even if he had other opinions in the past, vocalizes this correctly. A Trump baser would put it this way, "let those towelhead motherfuckers kill each other, I don't give a shit". As crude as that sounds, the truth is you will find that sometimes that you cannot help people who don't want help.

    If not now when?

I'm sorry to be so condescending about this, but both of these takes are super naive.

Consider this, please. This is from a Fox News NatSec reporter.

Now imagine you are someone in special forces who has been training and fighting alongside our allies in that region for several years and you tell them you're leaving them to be slaughtered, and a lot of them believe (not without good reason to believe) it's not because he gives a shit about you, but because the Turkish president has some sort of blackmail over Trump.

There is a reason the actually military people think just bailing is a horrible idea. It's going to get super ugly, and we're essentially letting dictators make the decisions for us because the man in office is either a coward or compromised. Not sure which is worse.
