President Trump: The NEW one and only politics thread

As the Trump/Mattis drama unfolded, I had to ask myself:


1. Do I think our troops are getting much done in Syria?

2. If it were a different president, would I be happy soldiers are coming home?

3. Do I find Mattis to mostly be like most hawks who just generally believe in intervention in ways I do not? If Obama fired him for being a hawk, is it some great loss that his hawkness is gone?

Those questions underline why Trump is such an ineffective lightning rod of a president. If he suddenly supported a single payer health care system, the media would focus more on how much it pissed off Ben Sasse than whether it did anything for America.

I mean, I have no fundamental issue with the troops coming home. That it made Mattis angry enough to quit...the fuck do I care? Except I have to care, because disagreement with Trump is the story.

Trump's frantically ignoring some national security memos so he can come up with another stupid Adam Schitt tweet.

 

The problem with the troop withdrawal is a) it is being applauded by Russia (which is staying there) b) it is being denounced by professional military c) it is being denounced by career diplomats d) the decision did not come with a plan about the whys and wherfores, a clear outline of the policy going forward - there was no thought put into it.

I would not be surprised if Trump pulls the trigger and outsources the job to Erik Prince. He's been lobbying for it and has arranged for some "helpful op-eds" in various publications.

What I find most odd is that I haven't heard a peep from Israel about the decision. You would think they would be alarmed by the US evacuating from the Middle East.
