It’s hard to keep track of what folks are feuding about when I only see one side of the conversations. And I’m OK with that.

Or born in Russia. She’s a deep state agent, Russian State. The ultimate Russian spy.

Just property, really. You can eat cheaply. Lots of low-cost things to do. That being said: My rent for a two-bedroom cottage in California is more than twice my mortgage for a big house in Canada. That took some... adjustment. But it's a fabulous place to live.

I have a friend who's thinking of moving to LA, and he asked me what I like about it: "The weather," I said. "The ocean. The food."

    "That's it? Three things?"

    "They're three pretty big things."

Add gas to that list. And with property comes property taxes, which actually hit harder for me and my family than our mortgage, because they sneak up on you (at least they have on me, but I need to be more cognizant).

I understand why people leave. I’m lucky we’ve been able to keep up, and we know how to deal because we’ve lived here our whole lives.

That said, California doesn’t give you margin for error. All it takes is one big expense (a year ago it was our sewer line getting clogged with roots and we had to replace it) and you’re chasing it for the entire year.

One of the fascinating things about the city for me, from a weird, anthropological perspective, has been its gross inequality. We just don't have that kind of spread up here. You see the giant houses of the Hollywood Hills looking over the pretty seedy streets of Hollywood. The new lofts of downtown with views of Skid Row. And then you start to wonder how some people got to live there, and others got to live there, and you're right, I think: They all live in a state with no margin for error. I hadn't thought of it that way. Such a fine line. Just a little push one way or the other, then momentum takes hold, and away you go.

It’s like that in every big city I’ve ever spent any meaningful amount of time in.

Have you ever been to San Francisco, Oakland, New York, Baltimore, Boston, San Diego, New Orleans, or Las Vegas?
