Almost two years in and it is still extremely difficult to fathom that Donald Trump is president of the United States. The complete lack of experience, the highly erratic personality, the taco bowl tweet, the Access Hollywood tape.....

I believe- hope - that is extreme thinking. I'm sure he'd like to do that. While he might have a few Jordans and Nunes that would go along, I don't think there is enough support to totally throw away the republic. If he'd try it, that would be the equivalent to Fort Sumter 2.0.

Given our obsession with celebrity, it's difficult to fathom it didn't happen sooner. Jessie Ventura and Arnold Schwarzeneggar sounded the warning bells. Ronald Reagan added a pinch of historical legitimacy (from celebrity to governor). America elected America (instead of a version of America wearing its Sunday best and acting accordingly).

Afraid to answer questions. Afraid to provide facts. Afraid to actually address the American public. He sends barely articulate and noncogent ramblings. And his supporters swoon with adoration reserved for deities.

And he campaigned that Mexico pays for the wall. Where’s Mexico’s money?

    It did happen sooner.

Helen Gahagan Douglas and George Murphy both precede Reagan.

Reagan gets us Ventura and Schwarzenegger . . . and Sonny Bono and Fred Grandy and Fred Thompson and Clay Aiken and Al Franken and others, less successful.

Aside from tweets, has Trump and/or his administration actually reached out to the Democrats to try to negotiate an end to this farce of a shutdown?

Of course not. There's no policy, there's no practice.

    There's only the tweet.

Trump doesn’t negotiate. It’s odd though because he claimed to be the great negotiator and negotiation is about compromise. It doesn’t have to be down the middle but give and take is negotiation. Trump is beholden to no one, he has a constituency of Anne Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. If they are satisfied, he is satisfied. Their goal is increased ratings, screen time, clicks, listeners and most of all, advertising dollars.

The democrats should offer to put the 5 billion in escrow on approval of the plans for the use of the money and a say in who gets the contracts, insurance that the construction companies don’t steal from the taxpayers. The democrats should also insist that trump repay the taxpayers with the promised Mexican payments.
