If you think WAR is influenced in any way by All-Star Game selections, that pretty much ends the conversation.

File this under obscure sports trivia - when Mariano Rivera was pulled for the final time at Yankee Stadium by Jeter and Petite - who replaced him on the mound and got the final out? (You'll never get it)

Matt Daley. Grew in Queens. Out of baseball a year later.

Not counting those who died before the Hall of Fame existed, I believe Halladay is the third Hall of Famer who died before he was eligible to appear on the ballot.

Clemente and Gehrig are the others.

I can’t think of many from other sports, either. Junior Seau comes to mind. others?

Completely different eras and the shortstop position was much more offensive than it was when Smith was playing. Now compare Vizquels offensive numbers to his peers through his prime.

Ted Williams is a bad example bc he had a notoriously bad relationship with the "knights of the keyboard," not winning an MVP when he hit .406 or even when he won the Triple Crown. Still, his general points certainly have substance. What don't you buy?

EDIT: BTW, this is insane, but Williams received MVP votes every single year of his career -- except the three he missed for service and the one where he only played 6 games.

As long as ballots can be kept confidential, social media wouldn't change votes to any great extent.

That is so completely and utterly wrong.

You get an increased WAR just by being named an All-Star?
