    I agree. People change.

What you did in the past 10 years should be a better barometer than 1984.

"Photographed" seems oddly qualifying word choice here.

“Democratic Party” is an actual proper name like Jeep, General Motors, Westinghouse or AT&T. “Democrat Party” is a full-blown do-not-ever-do-this in the AP Stylebook.

The Republicans missed it because they don’t see anything wrong with it.

On the other hand, a filtering process is fair and worthy and valuable.

Maybe now more than ever, too. Far too many "leaders" think their status puts them above reproach.

If you’re going to run for public office, ask people to put their trust in you, part of proving you’ve changed is owning your past pre-emptively and not hiding it, hoping nobody notices and scrambling to apologize when they do.

Back when he was a state Senator, he could have brought out the photo himself and used it as a launching point to talk about institutionalized racism in the medical field. *That* would have shown that he’s changed.

By letting it get dropped on him, how can his constituents really trust that he’s changed and isn’t only apologizing because he got caught?

Having worked on political campaigns, I can tell you we never thought to look for yearbook photos because:

A: they typically made the opposition candidate look better because they were likely go-getters.
B: it was generally on a non starter.

That being said I wonder in post kavanaugh world, these now will be mined for information.
