Wut? Do you mean "they" pick your major for you? As someone whose education was basically free, I can tell you: No. I had free will over my course selection. Same in the UK. Same in France.

It never ceases to amaze me how little smart Americans understand about the world. I had to explain to Jon fucking Tester that we don't die of heart attacks in Canada waiting for surgery. You guys have been brainwashed for so long about how great America is, (or was, according to Trump), you can't see how bad you really have it.

Apologies in advance if you mean something else, @Alma.

If I were a full-time Californian, I would be a hardcore advocate for independence. It could be a fabulous country.

First, if I say someone is doing a bad job - which I have with Trump, repeatedly, I am not justifying their presence in anything.

Second, Trump's ideas on immigration aren't very good and his messaging is as bad as possible. But, I mean, I'm an adult, and I don't need a president kissing my ass or sweeping a major issue under the rug to make me feel better. I just don't. Immigration policy sucked under multiple presidents. That they were, I dunno, kinder about it, doesn't make for less of a boondoggle.

I'm just past messaging on a lot of things. Not at the personal level, per se, but that policy, for goodness sakes, just give me something that works.

Oh, not quite that your major is picked, no.

More that, if college is subsidized to that degree, choices are going to be made along the way with the things you'd learn in classes so as to reduce waste and streamline the educational process.

It should be noted that I am against free college in the biggest way. Just the opposite. I'd prefer the government stop subsidizing loans, reduce the numbers in higher education and turn them back into learning institutions vs. the "human development" places they'd so much like to become. I like colleges pushing boundaries of thought, research and discussion, and when you make it free, you're going to do the opposite.

I don't have any particular illusions about America's greatness except in two ways:

    >>It feels it is great, and it feels it bears the burden of the world in a way that Canada does not because America bears that burden for Canada. Note I use the word "feels" as a qualifier that not everything one feels is actually real.

    >>People from other nations shit on America - its people, its policies, its way of life - disproportionately for one reason or another, and that, to some degree, is a marker of perceived greatness.

Actually, much of what you have been posting lately does sound like a defense of President Trump being in the White House. The way you keep trying to normalize his mess reeks of it.

Also, please don't yank one line out of a long post like that. It's misleading. It's dishonest and unfair to the other poster. It wasn't so long that you couldn't leave my comment in context and bold the part you want to respond to if you feel the need. Your claim that we're getting along just fine with him there is crap. That's the main thing I was disputing and you edited that out.

Your "I'm an adult" comment suggest that those who disagree with you are not behaving in an adult manner. Is that what you are claiming? If so, my error was in trying to engage you in a genuine discussion.

Regarding immigration, you're pulling the same crap many of President Trump's defenders pull, trying to sell this idea that there aren't degrees in anything. A thousand lies are no worse than one. A thousand mistakes are no worse than one. It's bullshit and it really stinks up the joint, so please do better. That other presidents did it badly doesn't make up for President Trump making it so much worse.

Please stop calling him President Trump until he has earned that distinction.

He’s such a Christian. He’s literally the embodiment of 1800 years of Christian theocracy.
