If California is an independent nation, Russia will be protecting them from Mexico.

Tuition is high because the loans are backed. It's also high because, well, it's the biggest, broadest system of higher education in the world that includes 1 million international students and a college degree is considered a "good," a thing to buy, that, increasingly, American kids are told you have to have...and, thanks to backed loans, you can have! The demand is high and access to the money is easy. The supply side can charge as it pleases, knowing the government backs it.

I don't see myself living in any particular fog on this issue. It's one of the biggest problems in America. I just don't think making it "free" would solve much without major, commensurate changes in high schools.

Oh, I can't speak much for Canada. I don't think European nations who have been repeatedly asked to spend more on their own defense - even prior to Trump making a stink about it - care too much that the United State is disproportionately footing the bill.

My general sense of the developed world's impression of the US is that America sucks, it can go screw itself, and it's full of terrible people, but, hey, not stopping America from spending its money and overfunctioning on the world's stage if it means those developed nations have to do less.

It's a little like all those millennials who claim to hate watch The Bachelor and make fun of it even though they've seen seven seasons in a row. Bashing on America is kind of a way to feel better about oneself. Even for Americans.

I think you could make it "free" - make college tuition (and loan payments) tax deductable up to $15k a year. Some schools would still be able to charge what they want if they were deemed "worth it" - others would get middled and have to get back to basics.

I’m certainly wary of anything like this on twitter. Who knows what’s real?

Some friends I know who have a home/mortgage said they’re paying significantly more. Small sample size.

Our taxes are essentially the same. Once the new law was announced, we went through everything and made adjustments. I assume many people did not.

All beside the point — this is a stupid tax cut for the ultra rich and shouldn’t have been done.

You really have to fuck up a tax cut to have it be a campaign liability like this one was in the midterms.
