Which does not help your point about Machado's opt out being good for the team.

Why not? It strengthens the argument for the opt-out helping the club.

If Machado plays well enough over the first five seasons to opt out, the Padres will have paid handsomely and reaped the benefits of five years of peak Machado, but they can let him walk knowing that it's unlikely he'll be able to continue producing at peak levels when he's age 34, 35 or 36. They can then reallocate those funds to pursue Acuna, Soto or whomever the next big free agent will be, and they won't be on the hook to pay Machado $90M for declining production over the final three seasons of this current contract. This isn't hard.

and you are not recognizing how things have changed in baseball. Opting out is not the sure thing you make it out to be. It is a hell of a lot more likely that he is in San Diego for the length of that contract and they are eating the back end of that deal. This isn't hard.

OK, so what's your point? If they hadn't given him the opt-out, he'd be locked in for 10 years anyway.

And if you think it's "a hell of a lot more likely" that a Boras client doesn't opt out, you haven't been paying attention.

You're right, free agency is exactly how it's always been.

Nice job avoiding the question. What's your point? If they hadn't given Machado the opt-out, he'd be locked in for 10 years anyway.

Show me the plethora of Boras clients who aren't opting out of their contracts. I'll hang up and listen.

The market has shifted. Have you not noticed the change in free agency?

The landscape has changed, what Boras clients did in years past, in a vastly different market does not mean that is how it will play out going forward.

Machado signs with San Diego, does that mean he's tanking to earn more money? If he was serious about winning he'd sign with Boston NY or Houston and damn making money.

OK, maybe he does opt out, maybe he doesn't. The opt-out still gives the club the opportunity to get out of the final five years of the deal and, being San Diego, I think they'll be ecstatic if he does.
