True that. It is all about the Benjamins, no doubt, and the Giants do have deep pockets. Still, we're looking a a rebuild for the next couple of years.

Right, but the Giants are a well-run organization. A decade in San Francisco is all but guaranteed to present some opportunities for success, rebuild or not.

Certainly possible, maybe the fans are already voting with their wallets

How did the Giants farm system decline so much? And just in general - is it the scouting or the lack of a good development that causes such a decline. Seems like scouts move around enough that there is some consensus in a player's ability. Maybe an underfunded/misguided training staff?

I'd be curious to find out which organization has the highest number of draftees on 40 man rosters, to see if there is that much of a gap. Obviously players move around a bit - some before they make their debut - but it would be interesting.

I'd be surprised if any team gives Harper ten years.

    We'll see.

to a certain extent this pays for the players who get 1st and 2nd round bonus money and international free agents who get large contracts at 16-19 years old who never make it. I am certain that the clubs make out better than break even, but it spreads the risk around. When baseball is somehow locked into guaranteed free agent contracts ( i know its voluntary but aside from player and club option years they are) the team takes the risks on the front end of high bonus draftees and high bonus international players. And they take a big risk on long term FA player contracts. The established FA players assume no risk. The young ones just assume the normal risk of not making it but are relatively well compensated anyway
Has Boras ever lost big free agent negotiation? I don't mean one where the player said, I want to stay here or I want to go there, now make the best deal possible.
If Harper doesn't get 10 and exceed the highest average annual salary then Boras loses. He staked out that ground and since he's held out this long there's no backtracking.

I guess the current scenario is the the Dodgers offered a significant annual value but at 5-6 years, tops. He tells the Phillies he'll take shorter years unless Philly bids up their 10 year deal

Harper is just 26. I understand the 10-year thing, but even if the last two years suck - $30 a year for sub-par performance might be the going rate by then. I can't believe some of the people making more than $15 mil a year right now.

Getting Harper is a Sabean move, not a Zaidi move.

As much as I want the Giants to grab a star, make a big splash, my brain tells me no, this is not the right move, even if its not my $$. I know if they spend on Harper, there will be less for others. Candidly, will I be happy the Giants are paying Harper $35M for the next 10 years but they can't/won't pay MadBum $200 for the next 10? No. MadBum was a major part of 3 titles and you don't ignore paying for past services rendered.

I'd be in favor if this was someone with Trout's track record, or Miggy, those guys were studs every year for their first 5 years. Same for A-Rod, Pujols, Bonds, Arenado. Harper, not so much. He's not going to get to another peak, even if that's his "prime" years.

While I do think Harper has star power - how is it that his WAR isn't even in the top 50 among active players? I frankly thought - bad last year or not - he still was a decent player. Is it all hype?

If only the Nats would have put in an opt after 4 or 5, this would have been signed before Christmas 2018.

As long as he stays in the NL but does not return to the Walgreens, I’m happy. And Beer Bong Brett will be really drunk.
