    I bought "You Gotta Play Hurt" more than 20 years ago and tore through it in about a day. My sides hurt for a week from laughing so hard.

    The gambling scene in Dead Solid Perfect, with the fictional high school and players, may be the best thing I've ever read. I'm going to order another copy of the book and re-read it.

    When he won the Red Smith Award in 2013 and spoke at the APSE convention, I was mesmerized. I wondered if the youngsters in the room had any idea. He dropped a line in his speech about Florida being shaped like a penis that kind of set the tone. It was a Dan Jenkins speech and it was wonderful.

    I must confess, outside of some stuff in SI, I knew Jenkins only by reputation (which I never disputed).

    However, a couple years ago at my local library's used book sale I was able to find a copy of "You Gotta Play Hurt." It was hilarious and enjoyable ( Some of the character names alone had me LOL), and at times all too real about the biz even though it was written years ago.

    RIP to a legend.
