Our country is the frog in the pot of water. I'd be satisfied if I just knew what the point of tearing apart our institutions was. Though I sadly suspect, tearing apart our institutions IS the point. The GOP can't hope to get anything more out of Trump (that they wouldn't get out of Pence). So I just have no idea why people are willing to flush their reputations. And I really have a hard time believing people that would go all in on Trump wouldn't be down with whomever else the GOP puts up.

What the fuck does reputation matter if there will never be any consequences for your actions? No matter what you do, you won't lose friends, power, or influence.

Your circle of friends is philosophically aligned with you. You won't lose them. If anything, your reputation within your personal and professional ranks will only be bolstered by your misdeeds.

Actions bereft of negative personal outcomes is true power, and with power comes influence. Of course, money fits into here, too.

Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar made me sweat on TV for a couple of hours and then I got up and left and got pwned on Twitter for the day? How shall I ever go on?

    FOH with reputation.

This is not strictly true. If Trump goes down next November, the remaining GOPers in and out of government will treat him as a nonperson (ask GW) and the legal establishment will freeze a guy like Barr right out. Ending his days as another Fox News shrieking head is quite a comedown. Not to mention maybe getting indicted and prosecuted in 2021.

People in DC live and die on their reputations and contacts. (see lobbying) If you are suddenly getting frozen out by the "establishment types" not getting invites to the parties or suddenly feel self-conscious around your set - that stuff matters to people who have always wanted to get into the top clubs, the top schools, top firms etc. Barr is pushing 70 so maybe it doesn't matter to him anymore.

I am sure this has been mentioned before but I just heard some of Barr's testimony when he asked Mueller "whats with the letter? Why not call me?", or something like that. Isn't it clear he sent a letter so there would be documentation of his displeasure knowing full well this would be public?
